From the Black Forest Loft to Mummelsee: Our favorite trip to the Black Forest

Just 35 minutes from Baden-Baden awaits one of the most beautiful spots in the Black Forest: Lake Mummelsee. A trip full of nature, views, and Black Forest delights.

A lake straight out of a fairy tale
There are places you don't just visit. You experience them. Lake Mummelsee is one of them.
Nestled between dark fir forests and the heights of the Northern Black Forest, the small cirque lake lies at an altitude of around 1,000 meters. Even at first glance across the water, one understands why stories and legends have surrounded this place for centuries.
Especially on warm summer days, Mummelsee is a wonderful alternative to the heat in Baden-Baden. While temperatures rise down in the city, the air up here is pleasantly fresh.
A walk around the lake
Those who prefer a leisurely pace should start with the circular path around Mummelsee. The path is almost entirely flat and leads all the way around the lake. New perspectives of the lake and the surrounding forests open up at every turn. The loop takes about 20 minutes and is also ideal for families.

Black Forest Cherry Cake with a View
A visit to Mummelsee would not be complete without a break on the terrace of the mountain hotel.
Here you can enjoy Black Forest cherry cake where it belongs: in the heart of the Black Forest.
With a cup of coffee, a view of the lake and fresh mountain air, even an ordinary afternoon suddenly feels like a holiday.
Up to the Hornisgrinde
Those looking for a bit more exercise should head towards the Hornisgrinde.
At 1,164 meters, it is the highest mountain in the Northern Black Forest.
The hiking trail starts directly at Mummelsee and leads through heathlands, light forests and over scenic ridges.
Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the region.
In good visibility, the view is sufficient:
across the Rhine plain
up to the Vosges Mountains in France
and on particularly clear days even as far as the Alps
Stop at the Grindehütte
Just below the summit lies the Grindehütte. It's a popular meeting place for hikers and offers simple, honest Black Forest cuisine. After the climb, a snack platter, a bowl of soup, or a slice of cake tastes especially good up here. The relaxed atmosphere makes the hut one of the most beautiful rest stops in the Northern Black Forest.

Why we love this trip
Lake Mummelsee combines everything that makes the Black Forest what it is:
Nature
Quiet
Outlook
regional cuisine
Movement
Slowing down
And the best part: it's less than an hour from Baden-Baden. That's why Mummelsee is one of the excursions we consistently recommend to our guests.
